Glyptopomus was named by Agassiz (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 502].

It was assigned to Glyptodipterini by Huxley (1861); to Osteolepidae by Woodward (1891) and Hay (1902); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Glyptopominae by Borgen and Nakrem (2016).
