It was assigned to Leptolepidae by Owen (1859); to Coelacanthini by Huxley (1861); to Coelacanthidae by Woodward (1891) and Mawson and Woodward (1907); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Latimeriidae by Forey (1998), Schultze (2004), Graf (2012) and Dutel et al. (2012); and to Latimeriinae by Ferrante and Cavin (2023).
