Chondrosteus was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine J Toar Sepkoski's reference number: 452,916].

It was assigned to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chondrosteidae by Grande and Bemis (1996) and Grande and Hilton (2006).
