Stylosphaera was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call R]. It is extant. Its type is Stylosphaera hispida. It is the type genus of Stylosphaeridae.
It was assigned to Stylosphaeridae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
