Murex calcitrapa was named by Lamarck (1803). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grignon (Lamarck collection), which is in a Lutetian open shallow subtidal sandstone/sandstone in France.
It was recombined as Crassimurex calcitrapa by Merle and Pacaud (2002).
