Pseudaelurus edwardsii was named by Filhol (1872). Its type specimen is MNHN-QU 9539, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Eofelis edwardsii by Kretzoi (1938) and Peigné (2000); it was recombined as Eofelis edwardsi by de Bonis et al. (2019).
