Graptolites amplexicaule was named by Hall (1847).

It was recombined as Diplograptus (Glyptograptus) amplexicaulis by Ruedemann (1908); it was recombined as Orthograptus amplexicaulis by Rickards et al. (2000); it was recombined as Rectograptus amplexicaulis by Nõlvak and Goldman (2007).
