Prionotus teretiusculus was named by Hisinger (1840).

It was recombined as Diplograptus (Glyptograptus) teretiusculus by Elles and Wood (1907); it was recombined as Glyptograptus teretiusculus by Berry (1960); it was recombined as Hustedograptus teretiusculus by Mitchell (1987).
