Graptolithus quadrimucronatus was named by Hall (1865).

It was recombined as Diplograptus (Orthograptus) quadrimucronatus by Elles and Wood (1907); it was recombined as Glossograptus (Orthograptus) quadrimucronatus by Ruedemann (1908); it was recombined as Glossograptus quadrimucronatus by Ruedemann (1947); it was misspelled as Graptolithus quardrimucronatus by White (1874); it was recombined as Orthograptus quadrimucronatus by Lapworth (1873), Berry (1960) and Goldman (1995).
