Watsonichthys was named by Aldinger (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Cosmoptychiidae by Gardiner (1963); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acrolepidae by López-Arbarello et al. (2010).
