Graptolithus ensiformis was named by Hall (1858).

It was recombined as Retiolites ensiformis by Hall (1865); it was recombined as Trigonograptus ensiformis by Ruedemann (1947); it was recombined as Pseudotrigonograptus ensiformis by Rickards (1973).
