Diplograptus pristis truncatus was named by Lapworth (1876).

It was recombined as Diplograptus truncatus by Lapworth (1877); it was recombined as Diplograptus (Orthograptus) truncatus by Elles and Wood (1907); it was recombined as Orthograptus truncatus by Ross and Berry (1963) and Williams et al. (2003); it was recombined as Rectograptus truncatus by Pribyl (1949) and Chen et al. (2019).
