Taxonomy
Paratarrasius was named by Lund and Melton (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l]. Its type is Paratarrasius hibbardi. It was considered monophyletic by Lund and Poplin (2002).

It was assigned to Tarrasiiformes by Lund and Melton (1982) and Sepkoski (2002); to Actinopterygii by Sallan (2012); and to Tarrasiidae by Lund and Poplin (2002) and Schultze et al. (2021).
