Taxonomy
Hughmilleriidae was named by Kjellesvig-Waering (1951). Its type is Hughmilleria.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Pterygotoidea by Tetlie et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Eurypteracea by Størmer (1955); to Hughmilleroidea by Braddy et al. (2002); and to Pterygotioidea by Dunlop et al. (2020).
