Acipenser was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Acipenserinae, Acipenserini.
It was assigned to Placoganoidei by Leidy (1873); to Acipenserini by Grande and Bemis (1996); to Acipenseriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Acipenserinae by Grande and Hilton (2006); and to Acipenseridae by Woodward (1895), Hay (1902), Jordan (1907), Leriche (1942), Estes (1964), Casier (1966), Estes (1969), Estes (1976), Nessov (1997), Weems (1999), Purdy et al. (2001), Welton (2015), Hastings and Dooley (2017) and Hilton and Grande (2022).
