Strophomena demissa was named by Conrad (1842).

It was recombined as Stropheodonta demissa by Hall (1852) and Boucot and Johnson (1968); it was recombined as Strophodonta demissa by Walcott (1884) and McAlester (1963); it was recombined as Strophodonta (Strophodonta) demissa by Hoel (2011).
