Archaeolepidotus was named by Accordi (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr l]. Its type is Archaeolepidotus leonardii.

It was assigned to Semionotiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Semionotidae by Accordi (1956) and Tintori and Lombardo (2007).
