Cyclolites rotuloides was named by Hall (1852).

It was recombined as Paleocyclus rotuloides by Bassler (1937); it was recombined as Palaeocyclus rotuloides by Northrop (1939); it was recombined as Porpites rotuloides by Jeffords (1955).
