Pentamerus knightii was named by Sowerby (1813). It is the type species of Kirkidium.
It was corrected as Pentamerus knighti by Davidson (1871); it was recombined as Conchidium knighti by Northrop (1939); it was recombined as Kirkidium knighti by Amsden et al. (1967); it was recombined as Kirkidium knightii by Bassett and Cocks (1974).
