Oligopleurus was named by Thiollière (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Oligopleuridae by Woodward (1895) and Woodward (1919); and to Semionotiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
