Cancer leachii was named by Desmarest (1822). It is the type species of Zanthopsis.
It was recombined as Xanthopsis leachii by Bell (1858); it was recombined as Zanthopsis leachii by M'Coy (1849), Schweitzer et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
