Taxonomy
Trachynotus sulcatus was named by Bell (1863). It is the type species of Trachynotus, Trachynotocarcinus.

It was recombined as Trachynotocarcinus sulcatus by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2012).
