Prosopon spinosum was named by Von Meyer (1842). It is not extant. It is the type species of Abyssophthalmus.
It was recombined as Nodoprosopon spinosum by Collins (1985); it was recombined as Abyssophthalmus spinosus by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2012).
