Anomoeodus was named by Forir (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 863]. Its type is Pycnodus subclavatus.
It was assigned to Pycnodontes by Thurmond and Jones (1981), Case and Schwimmer (1988) and Nursall (1996); to Pycnodontidae by Woodward (1895), Kriwet (1999), Shimada (2006) and Bice and Shimada (2016); and to Pycnodontiformes by Sepkoski (2002) and Suarez et al. (2021).
