Taxonomy
Athrodon was named by Sauvage (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l K u Sepkoski's reference number: 452]. Its type is Athrodon douvillei.

It was assigned to Pycnodontidae by Woodward (1895); to Pycnodontes by Woodward (1916); and to Pycnodontiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
