Grimmenia tillyardi was named by Kopeć et al. (2017). Its type specimen is BMNH I.3328, a wing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Alderton Hill Quarry (Slatter collection), which is in a Toarcian marine limestone in the United Kingdom.
