Histiocephalus bassani was named by De Zigno (1887). Its type specimen is MGPD 68487, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Histionotophorus bassani by Eastman (1904) and Carnevale and Pietsch (2010); it was recombined as Histionotophorus bassanii by Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
