Taxonomy
Malthodes obtusus was named by Förster (1891). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Brunstatt, horizon d3, which is in an Oligocene lacustrine - large marl in France.

It was recombined as Malthodes (Malthodes) obtusus by Fanti (2017) and Fanti (2017).
