Cladocyclus was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: K Nc K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Cladocyclus lewesiensis. It is the type genus of Cladocyclidae.
It was assigned to Sphyraenidae by Leidy (1873); to Chirocentridae by Woodward (1901); to Mugilidae by Hay (1902); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cladocyclidae by Cavin et al. (2013).
