Nucula (Acila) shumardi was named by Dall (1909). Its type specimen is USNM 406406, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Acila shumardi by Weaver (1916) and Clark (1918); it was recombined as Acila (Truncacila) shumardi by Durham (1944), Moore (1976) and Moore (1983).
