Meretrix pittsburgensis was named by Dall (1900) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Lectotype.]. Its type specimen is USNM 107396, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Callista (Macrocallista) pittsburgensis by Moore (1976); it was recombined as Macrocallista pittsburgensis by Dall (1903), Clark (1918), Weaver (1942), Durham (1944) and Hendy (2020).
