Gillicus was named by Hay (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 746,915]. Its type is Portheus arcuatus.

It was assigned to Saurocephalinae by Hay (1902); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Saurodontidae by Cavin et al. (2013).
