Leptaena patenta was named by Hall (1852).

It was recombined as Streptorhynchus patenta by Hall (1883); it was recombined as Strophomena patenta by Foerste (1887); it was recombined as Strophonella patenta by Schuchert (1897) and Gillette (1947); it was recombined as Strophoprion patenta by Eckert and Brett (1989) and Eckert and Brett (1989).
