Taxonomy
Rafinesquina alternata ponderosa was named by Hayes and Ulrich (1903) [Ulrich in Hayes & Ulrich 1903]. Its type specimen is USNM 35400 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Rafinesquina ponderosa by Wilson (1949).
