Notidanus primigenius was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was recombined as Heptranchias primigenius by Hay (1902) and Fowler (1911); it was recombined as Notidanus (Notorhynchus) primigenius by Weiler (1938); it was synonymized subjectively with Notorynchus cepedianus by Purdy et al. (2001); it was recombined as Notorhynchus primigenius by Kent (2018).
