Opistopteryx was named by Pictet and Humbert (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Mesogaster gracilis.

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); and to Elopiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
