Pecten virgatus was named by Nilsson (1827). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was recombined as Camptonectes (Camptonectes) virgatus by Dhondt (1972); it was recombined as Camptonectes virgatus by Dartevelle and Freneix (1957), Dhondt (1987) and Schneider et al. (2013).
