Mithrax was named by Latreille (1817). It is extant. Its type is Mithrax pilosus. It is the type genus of Mithracinae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Kiessling (2003); and to Mithracinae by Todd and Collins (2005) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
