Cancer hispidus was named by Herbst (1790). It is extant.

It was recombined as Mithrax (Mithrax) hispidus by Collins and Morris (1976); it was recombined as Mithrax hispidus by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
