Ostracion imperialis was named by Massalongo (1857).

It was recombined as Spinacanthus imperiale by Winterbottom (1974); it was recombined as Protobalistum imperiale by Tyler and Santini (2002), Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
