Lamna (Odontaspis) hopei was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was recombined as Odontaspis (Synodontaspis) hopei by Cassier (1966); it was recombined as Odontaspis hopei by Alessandri (1896) and Thurmond and Jones (1981).
