Taxonomy
Sphinx atavus was named by Charpentier (1843). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Radoboj (Grätz Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.
It was recombined as Vanessa attavina by Heer (1849); it was recombined as Eugonia attavina by Scudder (1875); it was recombined as Nymphalites atavus by Kozlov (1988).
