Plethodus was named by Dixon (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Plethodus expansus. It is the type genus of Plethodontidae, Plethodidae.

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Plethodidae by Weiler (1935); and to Crossognathiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
