Etrumeus was named by Bleeker (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Gaemers (1984) and Constantin (1999); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dussumieriinae by Arambourg (1925), Arambourg (1927), Steurbaut (1982), Steurbaut (1984) and Schwarzhans (2019).
