Ellimma barbarae was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1919). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Carpinteria, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in California.
It was recombined as Xyrinius barbarae by Jordan (1921) and Fierstine et al. (2012).
