Taxonomy
Cimolichthys was named by Leidy [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 718]. Its type is Cimolichthys levesiensis.

It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901), Hay (1902), Woodward (1902), Applegate (1970) and Thurmond and Jones (1981); to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cimolichthyidae by Goody (1969), Goody (1970) and Nagrodski et al. (2012).
