Oxoplecia abnormis was named by Cooper (1956). Its type specimen is USNM 110842, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is 1 mile east of Tilson Mill, which is in a Blackriveran carbonate limestone in the Edinburg Formation of Virginia.
