D. P. Domning et al. 2017 | Libysiren sickenbergi is a protosirenid sirenian distinguished from Ashokia antiqua by having a processus retro- versus on the squamosal [c. 77(1)], a zygomatic process that is dorsoventrally broader anteriorly [c. 81(1)], and a skull roof not narrowed at the frontoparietal suture, and by loss of premaxilla- frontal contact [c. 9(2); not lost in A. antiqua, as erroneously stated by Bajpai et al., 2009:259], lacking these derived features seen in A. antiqua: elevated zygomatic-orbital bridge [c. 11(1)], downward-elongated posttympanic process [c. 73(2)], prominent sigmoid ridge [c. 74(2)], wider external auditory meatus [c. 82 (1)], and a horizontal ridge along the ventral side of the mastoid foramen. Libysiren sickenbergi is distinguished from Protosiren fraasi by c. 9(2), by having the lacrimal inserted between the pre- maxilla and frontal [c. 93(2)], and by having an elongate midsec- tion of the jugal, while lacking reduction of the nasals [c. 32(1)]. It additionally differs from the later and more derived species P. smithae by having a processus retroversus [c. 77(1); variable in P. fraasi], while lacking separation of the nasals [c. 31(1)] and exoccipitals [c. 66(1)], a horizontal ramus not tangent to the man- dibular angle [c. 129(1)], and an enlarged tusk [c. 140(2)]. Libysi- ren sickenbergi is autapomorphic in displaying the correlated characters 9(2) and 93(2), which are otherwise seen only (and incompletely) in the dugongine Rytiodus heali. |
