Taxonomy
Pachytheca was named by Schlüter (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife]. It is not extant. Its type is Pachytheca sphaerica.

It was synonymized subjectively with Monotrypa by Bassler (1953).

It was assigned to Chaetetinae by Hill (1981); to Tabulospongida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Suberitidae by West et al. (2015).
