Taxonomy
Aulolepis was named by Agassiz (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Aulolepis typus. It is the type genus of Aulolepidae.

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Aulolepidae by Patterson (1964); and to Ctenothrissiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
